Portpatrick Audio Tour
Portpatrick
Community Council have just launched an Audio Tour of the village using Audiopass+ wands. We are the first place in the UK
to use these wands. The project was originally suggested about 5 years ago but due to lack of funding we
were unable to go ahead. Last year we decided to use some of the North Rhins Windfarm benefit money to fund the walk and,
along with some money received from Portpatrick (Shearings) Hotel, the Tour came to fruition. Much
of the historical information is thanks to Jack Hunter, local historian, who put a lot of time, effort and knowledge into
the project in the early days. We contacted Ken Jackson, Sounds Natural, in Kirkudbright who took charge of the recording
and general layout of the Walk and using local company, Campbell/Aylin for the design of the posters and handout and the Free
Press for printing, we feel we have used as many local businesses as possible in making the Tour. The
Wands can be hired out from Portpatrick Post Office & Store for £2 ( £20 refundable deposit) and instructions
are provided. The Tour can be stopped and started anywhere but there is obviously a suggested route which we recommend is
taken. The route takes in the history of the Harbour, the Lifeboat shop & Museum, the Lifeboat itself, McCook’s
Craig, the Princess Victoria tragedy, War time in the village, the Castle, Dashers Den and the Lighthouse. There are a number
of add-ons which include the Golf Course, plant and bird life and what to do in the area. The
Community Council feel this will provide, not just a valuable historical asset for the village, but a useful resource
for both visitors and locals, and while at £2 it is within the reach of everyone, it also provides potentially a good
couple of hours entertainment. Most of the Walk is accessible to the disabled, but where it isn’t there are a
couple of photos of the locations to view while listening to the commentary.
